I
had someone ask me about attacking the triangle and 2 if the other
team was manning your PG and your primarily stationary jump shooting 3
man. I came up with these two quick hitters and thoughts for attacking
that type of junk defense. In the entire college ball I have watched
this year and what little I have seen of high school ball, sadly, I
have noticed a lot more match-up zone and junk defenses being used.
Attacking the triangle and two can be done several ways. You can give
take the point guard who is being manned, let him start out at the top
of the key. You then run what I call "flood". You take all four other
guys and put them along the baseline. So, you now have 3 guys guarding
four. You will essentially either flatten out the zone portion of this
defense and or you will create all kinds of mismatches and open easy
shots for guys.
For
example. You take your point up top, put your 3 man
who is
also being manned on the right side block and or left side, depends
upon which side he shoots better from. You put your four man out in the
same corner as 3. You take your 5 man put him on the block opposite 3
and your 2 man in the corner in the same side as your 5. 1 dribbles the
ball at his man, probably also drawing the top man of the zone up a bit
to help. As 1 does this, 4 steps in setting a pick on 3's man so three
can pop out to the corner for the first option. As 1 dribbles to the
3's side, 4 rolls and pins on the block and five pops right into the
middle of the triangle from his weakside block. As he does this he will
draw that backside guy on the triangle with him and 2 who was in the
corner can pick his spot on the back side to get himself into for a
wide open 15 footer if he wants. Lots of misdirection and guys cutting
out of defenders site lines. Another thing you can do is this. Bring
everyone high, reverse flood, pulling up the three man zone and giving
you more space to drive.
You start out with 1 out top with the ball, 3 on the right elbow, 5 on
the left elbow. 2 is out on the right wing and 4 is out on the left
wing. 3 steps out to set a pick for 1 to come off of. As 3 does this, 4
cuts from the opposite wing to the low block, right through the
three-man zone to the right block and or mid block. Mid-block puts
pressure on the top man and right low guy in the triangle.
This has to be timed right and 3 has to set a good pick on 1's
defender, make his man have to help a bit. As 3 sets that pick, 5 steps
right over and sets a pick on 3's man. 1 passes the ball to 2 and cuts
to the right side corner. 3 flares off of 5's pick to the left wing for
the skip pass for the three point shot. 5 then steps to 2 on the right
wing with the ball after setting the back pick on 3's man and if 2 can
not get it to 3 on the skip he looks to hit 5 and 5 goes high low with
4 who will roll right into the middle and or 5 might well have a wide
open shot from the free throw line or a bit closer.
The key to beating junk defenses is to not let them take away what they
want to take away. It is as much a mental thing as it is anything else.
Those are a few ideas of things I might do.
