Foul Management

* Players must be coached in the art of fouling and clock manage-ment. They must know how, when and who to foul.

* In order to keep your oppoents out of the bonus situation as long as possible, players must be taught not to commit fouls early in a period.

* Most coaches assume that players know how to foul. In reality, when a coach tells a player to foul, he will simply go out and push or grab an opponent which often results in an intentional foul.

* When a player has to deliberately foul late in a game, he should first deny the passing lane and go for the ball. A steal is much better than a foul. When he does have to foul, he should foul by trying to knock the ball out of his opponent's hands.

* There is no room in the game for hard fouls especially on lay-ups when shooters are more vulnerable to injury.

* A coach must always know whether or not he has a foul to give at the end of a period. Often games are lost on last second shots because a team was either unaware that they had a foul to give or they were unprepared to foul correctly.

* A coach must also always know who the poor free throw shooters are for the opponent.

* When fouling to stop the clock late in the game, coaches must be alert to make defensive substitutions. Put players in the game that can afford to foul. Avoid letting your best players foul and be disqualified.

* There may be a time when you have to intentionally miss a free throw. Intentionally missing a free throw should be taught and practiced.
